Celebrities That Play Poker

By: Hillary Bluff

Poker has come a long way in the public eye. Poker is not a back room game anymore. Celebrities have started to get into the game. Let's take a look at a few of the celebrity names that are involved in poker.

A few years ago Jennifer Tilly started showing up at poker tournaments. Her boy friend Phil Laak, a top pro, obviously had been teaching her the game. When she won the WSOP ladies only event in 2005, the poker world had to take notice.

Sully Erna, lead singer for Godsmack, is a poker fanatic. He has admitted to changing the bands tour schedule, so he could play in the WSOP. He has made it to the money in the last two WSOP main events.

James Woods has been showing up at poker tournaments for years. He is a regular at the Hollywood home games. He also is involved in online poker, owning a poker room.

Ben Affleck, a regular cash game player, had a big win in 2004. He won the California State Championships of Poker main event ($10,000 buy in). He credits top pros Annie Duke, Antonio Esfandaria, and Allen Cunningham with tutoring him.

Not quite the big time movie star as the rest Chad Brown is another actor who plays poker. Well, maybe he is a poker pro who did some acting. With over $2 million in career earnings, he is clearly the best player of the celebrities. He is a regular at the big tournaments these days.

Surprisingly Chad hasn't won a big event. His closest try was a second place at a WSOP event. He would have loved to have that bracelet. He should get a big win some time soon.

Gabe Kaplan is the original celebrity poker player. His love for poker had him playing all the way back into the 1970's. He also was one of the original commentators for poker broadcasts.

He has been going to Las Vegas for the WSOP since 1978. Over the years he has managed to reach six final tables. This has been over a nineteen year span.

Gabe still does commentary for televised poker. He analyzes hands for the audiences watching the show High Stakes Poker. He has the poker knowledge, and quick wit, to entertain and educate you with his observations.

I'm sure we've left some celebrities off this list that should be here. As poker has grown in recent years, many new celebrities are getting into the action. The WSOP has more celebrities than are courtside at the Lakers games. They all want to take a shot at the big one.
