One of the rites of passage that most people is receiving their high school diplomas. This diploma is given as a reward for finishing the secondary level of education or high school. This is done by the school or institution during a student's graduation rites.

Though details in appearances may differ, schools usually have the same basic design for each diploma. The name of the educational institution is alway seen in the diploma. Other schools include their logos, some next to the school name or watermarked on the background. All these are important in determining where the student graduated from and in giving the diploma the look of an original one.

The name of the recipient or the student is also written in a high school diploma which is completed by the phrase: "Has completed the course of study, prescribed by the Board of Education for the High school and is therefore entitled to this Diploma." The date in also written in the diploma. On the lower part of the diploma, the signatures of the school president, and the principal is also written as their signatures attests to the validity of this document.

Receiving a high school diploma has become a significant rite towards adulthood as this document signifies that the student has successfully completed the basic education which is required by the government for the youth. This is commonly awarded during a graduation ceremony where in the name of the student is called out. The student then walks in the stage to receive their diploma.

In many countries, a high school diploma is an important requirement for an individual to be employed. Countries such as the United States and Canada considers a high school diploma as the minimum education required to obtain a job in certain companies.
